Some houses are built to be looked at. Zen Villa was built to look out. Nothing is there just for decoration, and yet nothing feels cold. There is a moment, on your first morning at Zen Villa, when you realize, you have stopped listening for anything except from the sea moving far below while the light slowly filling the room. You open your eyes because the sun has risen straight out of the Cretan Sea and found you! You make a coffee, step onto the balcony and the horizon is right there, wide and silver, with nothing between you and it. That is the feeling this house was made for.
Set on a quiet cliff at Paleokastro, just west of Heraklion, Zen Villa is a private, eco-friendly retreat for those who want to slow down and reconnect with the simple elements of nature: water, air, earth and light. Follow the footpath that winds down through the wild herbs to a small hidden beach. Ahead lies nothing but the Cretan Sea and the island of Dia on the horizon.
Inside, the architecture is honest and quietly dramatic. Natural materials, soft colours and floor-to-ceiling glass that slides open on almost every side, so the sea is present in every room and the line between inside and outside all but disappears. The furniture is simple and locally designed, keeping the atmosphere warm, calm and unhurried.
Zen Villa is spread over two floors and welcomes up to 6 guests in 3 en-suite bedrooms, each with a king-size bed. It suits families, couples travelling together and small groups who want space, privacy and a slower rhythm. The house is also available for intimate retreats.
The upper floor is one open, light-filled space that flows straight out onto a generous covered balcony and, beyond it, into the blue. It is a place to read, talk, share long evenings and simply sit and watch the sea change colour. Low sofas and oak tables can easily make way for yoga mats, turning the room into a peaceful yoga shala, and an integrated sound system and home cinema make it just as good for a film night or a special gathering.
The kitchen opens naturally from the living room, and the long wooden table by the window is where the days come together. Cooking, sharing and lingering over a meal are part of life here, in the spirit of a traditional Mediterranean family home.
The three bedrooms are on the lower floor, calm, bright and quiet, with built-in oak platform king-size beds dressed in natural linens. Above every bed hangs a large hand-drawn work inspired by Minoan art and by the element each room is named after: swallows in flight for Air, leaping dolphins for Water and the famous Bull-Leaping fresco of Knossos for Earth, a quiet reminder that this is Crete, where these images were first painted more than three thousand years ago.
Bedroom 1 – Air – King-size bed | En-suite bathroom with shower | Opens to the shared front balcony | Sea view
Bedroom 2 – Earth – King-size bed | En-suite bathroom with shower | Private outdoor space | Sea view
Bedroom 3 – Water – King-size bed | En-suite bathroom with shower | Opens to the shared front balcony | Sea view
Every bedroom faces the sunrise, so the light wakes you gently each morning.
The bathrooms continue the same calm language: large grey stone-effect tiles, white basins on slim black steel frames, round mirrors, brushed metal pendant lights and walk-in glass showers. Black sliding barn doors with small oak handles separate them from the bedrooms, and narrow vertical windows let in a thin line of daylight.
A separate guest WC sits off the living area.
An espresso corner and a laundry area sit in the corridor that connects the bedrooms, so your first coffee is only a few steps from bed and longer stays are easy.
Outside, the villa steps down the cliff in a series of terraces. On the lowest level, an infinity pool lined in sea-green mosaic follows the curve of the stone wall and seems to pour straight into the bay. Around it, a terrace of natural flagstones, an old olive tree and soft bean-bag loungers make it easy to lose a whole afternoon. Higher up, the covered balcony of the living room is lined with sling loungers that face the open sea, and below it the bedrooms open onto the shared front balcony or, in Bedroom 2, a private outdoor space.
From the garden, a path lined with local plants and trees winds down the hill, past a tiny family-built church and the owners’ organically raised chickens, to steps carved into the natural stone. At the bottom waits a small, secluded beach with sun and shade and warm, crystal-clear water, along with a wooden deck at sea level for sunbathing in complete peace.
Small Infinity Pool | Flagstone Pool Terrace with Bean-Bag Loungers | Covered Balcony with Sea View and Sling Loungers | Bedroom Balconies & Private Outdoor Space | Garden Path | Tiny Family-Built Church | Secluded Beach on Foot | Wooden Deck by the Sea
Wellbeing is part of the design here, not an extra. Down by the water, the wooden deck becomes a quiet place for morning practice, and the terraces are wide enough to roll out a mat with the whole sea in front of you. Singing bowls rest on the shelves, and private yoga sessions can be arranged on request. At sunset, with the sky turning orange over the water, it is easy to understand why the house is called Zen.
With three equal bedrooms, a big shared living space and a kitchen made for cooking together, Zen Villa is ideal for families and small groups of friends who want to relax and connect while still having their own private corners. Please note that the house stands on a cliff and the path to the beach is steep, so younger children will need to be watched closely.
For larger groups, The Townhouse, the sister property of Zen Villa, can be booked together with it as a natural extension of your stay. The Townhouse cannot be booked individually.
Zen Villa is just as inviting in October or February as it is in July, which makes it a rare base for a long stay in Crete all year round. Picture a working day that starts with the sunrise and a swim, continues at the long wooden table with the sea on two sides, and ends on the balcony as the lights of Heraklion appear across the bay. The quiet, the space and the calm rhythm of the house make it easy to focus, while the airport and the city are only minutes away when you need them.
