Villa Oak Tree

For those hoping to reconnect with nature, Oak Tree Villa sits in the middle of the green Cretan countryside. Built of stone and wood, it blends into its landscaped garden and the hills around it. Step inside and you notice the hand-crafted wooden furniture, the height of the room and the light coming through the glass doors, and beyond them the mountains, one ridge behind another, all the way to the horizon.

The villa stands on the green slopes above Peponides, a small village about 7 km from Agios Nikolaos. The sun comes up over the hills in the morning and in the evening the same hills turn pink and gold. In between there is a heated pool, an outdoor kitchen with a wood oven and three acres of land to wander through. When you want a change of scene, the lake, harbour and tavernas of Agios Nikolaos are ten minutes down the road.

Inside Villa Oak Tree

Inside, the house is one generous open space under a pitched wooden roof. Most of the furniture is made of wood, from the carved coffee tables to the platform beds, and it is kept simple so that the stone and timber stay in the foreground.

Oak Tree Villa covers 200 m² on one level and welcomes up to 8 guests in 3 bedrooms and an open loft bedroom, with two bathrooms.

Living Room

The living room is where everyone ends up. A deep L-shaped sofa faces an eco-friendly fireplace, ideal for gatherings on cool evenings. The 85-inch TV with international sports and movie channels and the Sonos speakers indoors and out make it just as good for a film night as for a long dinner with music.

Kitchen

The kitchen sits under the loft and has all the major appliances you need to cook a good meal. The dining area is right next to it, so whoever is cooking stays part of the conversation.

The three bedrooms keep the same warm mix of stone, pine and white linen, with quality mattresses and pillows in every room. A wooden staircase leads from the living room up to a loft bedroom, tucked under the roof beams with soft light washing over the stone walls.

The Bathrooms & Laundry

There are two bathrooms: a sage-green en-suite bathroom in the 1st bedroom with a built-in bathtub and a walk-in shower, and a shared beige bathroom with a walk-in shower.

A laundry room with a washing machine and a dryer makes longer stays easy and comfortable.

Outside Villa Oak Tree

Outside, the living room opens onto a wide mosaic terrace and a refreshing heated pool with built-in jacuzzi jets. Sun loungers and a pool daybed line the water, and from every one of them the view is the same: layer after layer of green Cretan hills, shining like emeralds in the sun.

Next to the pool is an outdoor kitchen and bar with a traditional wood-fired oven, a gas BBQ, gas hobs, a fridge and a wine cooler, plus a 55-inch TV and sound system for match nights outdoors. With three separate sitting and dining areas, there is always a shady corner at lunch and a table in the last of the sun at dinner. Beyond the terrace, the garden spreads across the hillside to a round built-in outdoor lounge, a good spot for an early coffee or a glass of wine at dusk.

Cooking & Long Evenings

Life at Oak Tree Villa moves outdoors in the late afternoon. Light the wood oven early and by dinner it is ready for fresh bread, slow-cooked lamb or a tray of vegetables from the market in Agios Nikolaos. Pour something cold from the wine cooler, put some music on and let the evening run as long as it likes. When the nights turn cooler, the fire inside is waiting.
